Rear View: Maghadeera “ Mass Bunk”

Note:Its been close to 10 months, since the first and also massive bunk,of GITAM  University Hyderabad.

The memory of this bunk, probably lies buried deep inside various students of GITAM ,some of you weren’t part of GITAM University Hyderabad, just yet,and some were probably astonished to see the classrooms nearly empty on their first day.

The blog’s memory,of the maghadeera bunk,is pretty vague to,but nevertheless we have pooled in all we know about that bunk,to make this post possible.

INTRODUCTION:

The first canteen management was a notorious one ,it was more into students affairs rather than its main objective of providing quality food ,the one particular incident which lead to the fall of the first canteen is known on campus as the maghadeera bunk ,the canteen manager virtually  arranged the tickets for the bunking lot,and also provided “logistic” support,Which irked the management to the core!

Rear View:

This Blogzine was non-existent during the first semester, and hence we have no old post to link too,and hence we decide to recollect the adventures of Maghadeera, for the sake our our new readers, ala, the juniors,Vizag gitamites, and non-gitamites.

Here follows a brief introduction to the Maghadeera effect on campus,Click here for a briefer note on the mass bunk,Click Me.

THE ADVENTURE:

On the morning of  31st,August,2010 it was unanimously decided to have a mass bunk, albeit the only one of its kind, and never again to repeat again in the history of GITAM  University Hyderabad.

During the first semester the University used to run private buses for the students unlike the current college buses.

And the drivers of these buses used to be extremely cooperative, and hence the students ended up using their services like stopping the bus at any point they like, while on the way to campus in order to bunk, this was the norm during the first month of functioning.

August being the second month, most of the students used to get along well with  everyone, they hardly had any difference, and this actually played a pivotal role in the success of the mass bunk.

The college, used to hire/operate 3-4 odd private buses, and the the LB nagar bus students got down at lakadavaram(2km from Rudraram),while a virtually empty bus arrived on campus :P

The narayanguda/Ameerpet/kukatpally bus students  on the other hand were in a dilemma whether to bunk or to visit the campus, and hence the buses arrived half filled on campus, with the ECIL bus coming in the same situation,The management was aware of this bunk to hence their bus,the separate faculty bus was constantly tailing the students buses, but at the end of the day,the students won it out right!

The initial tactic of letting the morfus over take the students buses failed,as the faculty made sure they formed the rearguard of the motorcade, rather “buscade”,so the students encouraged the drivers to burn more rubber !!

And the morfus couldn't catch up,the student buses were quick and reached the campus a healthy 10 mins prior to the morfus, and this made all the difference on that day in those 10 mins alone close to 40% of the students from ECIL/Narayanaguda route(Included Ameerpet/kukatpally-They were not separate during that time),in those valuable 10 mins, most of the students moved into the Rudraram streets, and flooded the streets, waiting, waiting for the morfus to enter the campus so that they can head back to the camp,in Doven County.

And the morfus finally arrived, once the Morfus entered the campus, the students flooded the main road of Rudraram, and packed off in various sharing autos and buses to doven county.

(Morfus pictures coming soon)

WHY THE TAILING ?

You see the management got a wink of the planned mass bunk, spearheaded by EEE/CSE ,which registered the lowest strength on that day, followed by IT and ECE,find itself at the last place,in terms of students participation.

The major reason for the managements concern over this bunk were :

  • A high profile, visit by the Vizag campus management, rumoured to have included M.V.V.S. Murthy!!(Who is he ? The founder!!)
  • Maghadeera was a long awaited movie, and most of the students were movie buffs, the management tried to stop the mass bunk.

The plan of the show was hampered by various reasons, the show was initially projected to have taken place at 11:00 am,but since the theatre was a brand new one(it was the opening ceremony),the timeline of the movie conveniently pushed up and up and finally landed up at 14:00 hrs(odd).

The price was 50 rs per ticket, which was not at all a bad deal, actually some tickets sold were worth only 10 rs :P.

Slowly most of the crowd started disintegrating due to the extending timeline of the show, and finally the number of people who ended up for watching the movie was touted to be about 50 students.

But the initial crowd which came over to Doven County(Doven County township, lakadavaram:the epic centre of the bunk, two  houses here were rented out to the canteen manager, and the students made it their base),there was everything there to please all the bad guys and good guys alive, some of the activities included,Cricket!,and everything  else  naught and nice things  boys do when they get together. (Perverted Heads, its surely not what you think!!!!)

Later at about 1:30 odd,the students started moving over to Isnapur(4 km from lakadavaram,6 from Rudraram),the place where the movie was being screened.

TRANSPORT:

Some had to walk, some took sharing autos, others were riding “tricky” on the canteen bikes :D

THE SHOW:

Only one word, can define the experience of being in a brand new theatre with close to 50 odd gitamites,Awesome!

The only thing which probably put the students in a tight spot was reaching home, some students reached home as late as 9:30 !!

CONSEQUENCES :

Obviously, with close to 60-80% of the campus being empty, the management couldn’t be dormant.

Even thought only 40-50% were present in Doven county, there were various other small break off groups, which headed over to Imax,PVR,Talkie town, and where not!

And,hence the attendance for that day was about 20%,the management decide to take a “tough” stand against the students, and it ended up not sticking to its “tough stand”,which kind of made the management look brittle.

The management failed to take action due to the huge response to the bunk, obviously calling up 80% students parents is an uphill task, and may be that was the reason the management decided  to let the students go free, yes  obvious things like letter from your parents Blah Blah did take place, but that was it.

And we at the Blog, are pretty sure, that such kind of a mass bunk, will not be possible in the near future, due to the various cracks which have appeared in the various branches, and branches themselves.

Regards,

lifeatgitamhyd

P.S.if there is one thing/group which can make another massive bunk possible,it has got to be LAGH ! :P

GAT 2010(B.tech/B.pharm) COUNSELLING : 16th June.

Lets, get this straight, and crystal clear before you accuse us of Yellow Journalism or any other such term.

LAGH’s,buzzing Bee(Yeah, the bee, which keeps telling us stuff about the ATM or the AC canteen,*Why did you have to pull your eyebrows ? :P*,Find more  on it after two days , and Virtually feeds the SCOOP!! section of the blogzine :))

NOTE:The UGM/PGM, extended counselling will be held from 29th May.

Test Code 88(M.tech/MBA): Will probably be held, after the first counselling of B.tech/B.Pharm.

this is not the official, release or the statement of GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD OR VIZAG,we are only quoting a source, and this blog post, doesn't imply that this is the official stand of the university.

COUN “SELL” ING:

Yes,according to reliable sources ,GAT 2010 Counselling is set to take place from 16th June, for the B.tech/B.pharm streams.(GAT 2010-test Code 99),and we believe we are the first ones  to report this, this may be wrong too,but our understanding is that if it isn’t on the 16th of june,it will be in the region of 16th of June.

So,come 16th June,the selling of seats will start,yet again!

DEADLOCKS:

The only, thing which is stopping the GAT 2010 counselling,is probably the full fledged construction going on in both the campuses,Vis-à-vis, Vizag and Hyderabad.

But,it is basically the Hyderabad campus, which has put the GITAM  Administration in a cleft stick,as the construction work is not going on as per the initial plans(Ah,*with extreme sarcasm*Something different right ? ),the management wanted the hostels,at least a couple of rooms, with electrical wiring (No,the EEE students are not doing IT!),so that the prospective set of  “bakaras”,will have something to chew on before looking at the kind of infrastructure we have like the Library we had to live with for over a year,30-40 copies of Each Important Book(Ex:E. Balaguruswamy:Object oriented Programming ) ,for a strength of 240 ppl, which is extremely disappointing and having had to shell out the price of a NANO(Yes,we love the NANO,that is more Value for Money, than the 1 lakh for the Hyderabad campus,we “The seniors ” paid last year :)),it was an extremely pathetic year, for book lovers specifically.

CONSTRUCTION WORK:

And this blog, was busy protecting, and trying to point out the positive things on campus to prospective juniors,Which were in fact extremely limited.

We tried our best not to mislead  our would be juniors into a false trap,All we at LAGH seek is  to throw light on important issues, which have been plaguing the campus of GITAM  University Hyderabad.

Right, back to the dates,June 16th,it would have been early or a little bit later probably depending upon how a few things pan out on campus,Hyderabad.

The management surely doesn’t want to show,a semi-constructed building, with sand dunes covering close to 1/3 of the ground, and construction work going on at every available space!!

You wouldn't be mistaken,if you take the campus in the current  situation to be a mass scale construction work site of the Outer Ring Road, which is just 6 km from Rudraram!

“SELLING” POINT :

Come on,for a fees of 1.25 lakhs,We believe that it is a pretty heavy price, for the kind of infrastructure,be it the Library,Sports or Fire safety for that matter.

But,people, especially parents tend to join their kids in this institute due to the BRAND name of GITAM,Which turns out to be the USP of this campus, and the only reason the seats filled up last academic year :)

And we at the Blog hope, that the management wouldn't end up disappointing our juniors, the same way it did with us,the seats will surely fill up at least 90 % of the seats in the Hyderabad campus will fill up,but will the management fulfil at least 60% of its promises, remains to be seen…So raising a toast to this exclusive release of the probable dates of GAT 2010 Counselling,we would like to end this post with a snapshot of the GAT 2010  Rank card,Which has a huge blunder in it..:P

And filling up the 2000+ seats of GITAM  University, the management will definitely get some grist to the mill!

(1800 odd seats in GITAM University Vizag,840 in Hyderabad:each seat is 1.25 lakh, now that is quite some  cash flow :))

We changed the template, yet again,we moved over from our peace template, which was hosted in memory of the Mangalore Crash victims.

 blog_peace

The new template, which has a thunder in the background, depicting  the Results of B.tech stream which struck 10 days back, the new template also brings a hidden message about the forthcoming posts from the blogs stable which will strike like thunderbolts(its just a figurative of speech, don’t take it literally!!),like extra sensitive SCOOP!! ,and a pretty confidential .pdf file, which dropped by at our inbox.(lifeatgitamhyd@gmail.com)

We are going to publish that confidential .pdf file, pretty soon!!

And once we do,the thunder template, will change again !

Editors Speak : 7000 Hits.

Yes,the name has changed, from personal messages at regular milestones, like the number of hits on the hit counter,or just the passing of another month.(Keeping in mind, the Blogzine status of this Blog ,we have changed from personal messages by paz to Editors Speak)

We seek to set these both(Every passing Month/Hits) as our milestones in this never ending(at least for the next 3 years),journey of lifeatgitamhyd .

Today,we have hosted a new template,in remembrance of the Mangalore crash victims.

blog_peace

We are doing our bit by choosing not to  publish any celebratory posts, like the tradition has been, for example, during the 2000 Hits,we came up with a bundle of SCOOP!! articles(Four to be precise),and similarly at 2700 Hits,we launched the Blog, into the world of Twitter and Facebook (Fan Page),thought the twitter account, has been dormant for quite some time, some how,Tweets have not really caught up with Rudraram, and we will wait for the juniors, before we re-activate the twitter account :),in memory of the victims.

The SCOOP!!’s,posts can all wait for a couple of days, but expressing condolences can’t.

COMMNUITY:

But,nevertheless,We choose to throw, some more light on the LAGH Community, which has been in the development for quite some time now(a week),we recently published a stand alone post, informing, the readers about the conception  of the online Students portal.

I would like to clear some mist which covers the details about the Community.

  • It is a Students portal(SP) for the students of GITAM UNVIERSITY HYDERABAD.
  • Your associating with the SP,doesn't imply your associating with this Blog.
  • We don’t seek to promote the Blog, via the SP,(it is the other way round actually :p)

We came to a conclusion, that GITAM UNIVERSITY Hyderabad, desperately needs a students portal, where the students of GITAM can, express, and showcase their interest in various fields, and not to forget ,debate and discuss sensitive topics(Not,Porn :)),away from the eyes of the faculty and management.

orkut/Facebook,are not privacy protected,by if they are privacy protected,it snatches away the core reason for an online group.

So,the Students portal,is here to address the needs of all the students alike(Be it the groups like  Saints(IT),Freaks(CSE),Rebels(EEE),Crusaders(ECE),Mob(Union),Frisky(CSE) or just gitamites)

Note:Stream in parenthesis, indicate majority of students hailing from that group.

START UP:

Now,the main issue on hand,After publishing the sneak peak of the Students Portal,We have personally received quite some queries like,

  • “I hate your blog(Cause,my groups;stream wants to..:P),Can I join the Students portal ?”
  • “I don't support lifeatgitamhyd,will I be looked down,in the SP ?”
  • So on and so forth.

I repeat,Some one had to take the initiative ,and We at lifeatgitamhyd have choose to take up the initiative,So,The Lifeatgitamhyd team, will only be providing the required support.

To make matters clear,We have recruited moderators for the Students Portal, who have not been associated with the functioning of the Blog :)

The Blogs team,is pretty small, about 10 odd people, and about 20-30 Contributors, and We still don’t wanna reveal the number of observers we have got :P,the cadre was officially revealed, when the 3800 hits came up,click Here.

but,the Observers, still remain concealed, unlike the top contributors, who have been stripped apart of their anonymity, either by their own deeds or the Blogs, but that is all past.

But,still 30 odd strong contributors,still remain hidden,And a reminder,they are not just restricted  to the b.tech stream :)

 JUNIORS:

Yes,we have already got quite a good set of juniors onto the ranks of lifeatgitamhyd ,Actually the last two posts on this Blog(Red Fort of Rudraram!,GAT  2010 Counselling ),were handled by the juniors team, with obvious help from the oldies of the Blog.

And their next, assignment,is the big trip to the Campus,an extensive photo session,of the campus, during the GAT Counselling.

We are as desperate as you(the readers) are to check the work of the new team.

360 View:

this new baby of ours is still under development, and require plenty of investment, not just time but funds also (Same with the students portal :))

Campus 360,aims to provide a 3d view of GITAM University Hyderabad,we have started the process, ala, the coding, required soft wares, and everything.

But,we are still unsure of our success at the campus 360,with our current crude means and funding.

Nevertheless,we are reluctant to give up on a new idea on petty issues,we choose to take the development of Campus 360 forward, and probably succeed.

Obviously,it takes time, and we have two babies on hand right now,

  • Students Portal
  • Campus 360

The Students portal is near to completion, thought even after opening the admissions to it,we will be updating it every couples of days.

While, the Campus 360 project is still on paper.

Regards,

lifeatgitamhyd.

p.s.GITAM UNIVERSITY VIZAG,launched their own magazine,Infocus.

We claim that this Blogzine by GITAM UNVIERSITY HYDERABAD is loads better :),from a students point of view.

The Red Fort of Rudraram!

No,your eyes aren’t deceiving you, neither have we at the blog gone gaga, nor did the Red Fort move over to Rudraram!

The last time,we were comparing an heritage site to something related to Rudraram, was when the great wall of Rudraram gave way in comparison to the Great Wall of China,Click here, and this time we refer to the Red Fort.

A person, suggested  that the campus looked like the Red Fort along with its construction zone, and she was definitely not wrong !!

The campus does indeed look as if there is a Red Fort coming up,the analogue  is definitely not obvious, but come on, the place where the campus is located (light years away from the Urban world),a nine  floor building and five floors in Red Bricks,A building in Red pops up into your view, the moment you are in the vicinity of Rudraram, and if the Kid in you is still alive, the connection to the Red Fort is a lil to obvious, but then this structure is neither that popular, nor is it that stunning, its just another High Rise building for the urban folks.:)

The "Fort"

The pic depicts only three floors in red, wait for the latest pic :)

BRICKS:

Brick,Brick,Bricks,everywhere !!!

Turn left,Ouch !!

Bricks!!

DSC01020

Turn Right ,ouch!!

Bricks!

   DSC01021

Move forward,

Broken brick ,argh..!!!

DSC01019

And now,we seriously wonder,Is the college churning out students or running a brick factory, with invisible brick kilns!

Okay,we give up!

The campus,is not functional for the students,so it hardly matters.:P

BRICK BATS:

We all remember, the numerous times we have played around hitting each other, with Chalk “missiles ”,be it either in School,or College,or in the “Deemed university”;It used to be fun and it never used to hurt anyone,We at the blog seriously feel,it is time to upgrade the weapons,How about using brickbats for a change ?

So the next time, the campus opens up for educational purpose, don't be surprised if the bricks replace the Chalks !!

GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD PRESENTS:GAT2010

After having been put through a  troublesome GAT-2010,examination,held during the month of April, and May,the exams came to a “grand” end on the 5th of may,2010.

The ranks have been announced about a couple of weeks, ago and no one is to Happy, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of students who wrote GAT 2010,the number is touted to be 46,000 students, while we assume it to be closer to 40,000.

The campus of GITAM University Hyderabad plays hosts to the counselling session,to be commenced in a couple of weeks, for the B.tech stream, the counselling for the GITAM SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT HYDERABAD,is already under way,as this post is being written.

The campus has been decked up for the GAT 2010,counselling , the changes and pictures duly follow:

 Sick Color combos!

As usual, with the management the dumbest and the sickest colour combos of Hyderabad are always found in the flexi stuff printed on or behalf of GITAM UNVIERSITY Hyderabad Campus.

Be it the Fresher's Party,or Kibbutz’10 or any other event, they never seem to get the colour combo’s right, its either that or they never seem to invest in proper flexi printing.

When you are running a deemed university, you ought to get some kinda of a snob value too,and you definitely won’t get it if you go in for Flexi printing in Rudraram or Patancheru for that matter.(Did someone say a Subway is coming up on campus ??)

Anyways done with debating the weird colour combinations, lets make a move into the changes, made to please the next set of idiots who will  probably walk into GITAM UNVIERSITY Hyderabad, with lots of hopes and expectations, and we of the current batch are hoping atleast a few of the new batches hopes are fulfilled..:P

THE CAMPUS:

In all three rooms have been “decked up!”,to be used for the counselling for the management seats.

ROOM 202:

Is being used to house the verification section of the counselling.

Room No 202 for verification1

Regular students/Current students will obviously note, with out us pointing out the changes in the following picture,But for the sake of the newbie's on campus, lets revisit and explore Room 202,the EEE Classroom.

Room No 202 for verification

  • The Desktop
  • The Green Carpet on the dice.

So don’t expect theses to stick to this room for a long time.

But,how many ever changes the management gets into the classrooms, the EEE classroom(202),will be remember, for one thing and this is the one thing which makes it special.

KIBBUTZ’10:

During Kibbutzz’10,the EEE Classroom, played host to a virtual gaming zone, which raked in quite some profits(Compared with other stalls),and the way the EEE boys, decked the classroom was fabulous, and the eerie feeling the students experienced the moment  they entered the EEE classroom, was apparently remarkable, and gave all the adrenaline rush  you needed to get into the mode of gaming Bonanza(that was their name).

Mess after the festival! My cans!

Note:The Pepsi featured in the above pic,are unadulterated and the Blog bears witness to it,they were simple Pepsi my cans :)

(And just cause we are referring to it,it doesn't imply you need to raise your eyebrows!)

DSCF0350  DSCF0344

The lights had to be switched on to click the pics, else it would have been a normal black pic.

DSCF0346

A projector and a screen, the Big gaming Experience!

DSCF0347

Back to GAT 2010,ppl..!

ROOM 203:

The Classroom of CSE is the registration desk for GAT 2010.

Room No 203 Registrations1

PHOTCOPIES:

Room No 204 for Xerox1

No,the management hasn't invested in a new photocopying machine (just yet),it used to be one hell of a task to get photocopies, during the exam times, with only one humble machine with a humble operator, running the show and catering to the exploding need of 240 students during the exams!

The sooner the management gets another machine the better, forget the ATM’s for a while, get photocopying machines!

Room No 204 for Xerox

And that brings an end into this exclusive sneak peak of the GAT-2010,preparations,on campus with the help of some excellent contributors, and an excellent cameraman(:P) ,we finally end this post.

Keep an eye on the Blog for the part two of prelude to the Big Trip To The Campus.

regards,

lifeatgitamhyd.

Prelude to the big trip to the campus.

Thanks a lot!!!!(The next big contributor and he might eventually head our discussion forum site..:))

First off all, thanks to the excellent contributors of this Blog, some are very disappointed at their results let me apologize,if we had anything to do with it.

But,the Blog will go on….

PRELUDE:

The following post is just a prelude to the big campus, photo session, which will be under taken in a couple of weeks.

The current picture gallery is growing older by the day,8 odd month to be specific.

But,we are ready to take on another massive photo session of the campus, after a couple of weeks.

THE DEVELOPMENT:

Some of the major changes, which we are going to look at in this post are listed out here,

CAMPUS:

  • Demolition of staff room
  • Desktops in 203,204.
  • “Massive renovation”(Void Fire safety)

HOSTELS:

Hostel development on a rampage, revision of the deadline to complete them pushed forward by a day.

THE DEMOLITION DURBY:

Image0641

The management has decided to increase the space near the reception,by taking down the wall which separates the reception area and the staffroom1,(room 205) ,which houses some of the well know staff like Mr.Sampath Kumar, and Ayesha maam etc.

 Image0642 Image0643

The idea is to expand the reception area and, make the late comers sit there,a practice which is currently dormant, but was heavily prevalent in the First semester.

The members of this staffroom will be moving over to the juniors floor, ala, the 3rd or fourth floor,is still unclear.

Image0644

DESKTOPS IN 203,204:

Don't get excited about this, the classroom we are referring to have been used by ECE and CSE for the past two semesters.

No,the following pictures haven't been photoshoped, they are true, after a long year we finally get pcs in the classroom..!!!

ECE

But,hey wait up!!!

these desktops,aren’t here to stay!!!

Right, they are here only for the counselling of GAT-2010,and once its done, they will probably end up back in their base, ala the computer labs.

CSE

RENOVATION:

It isn't high profile renovation, the campus isn’t being decked up for a massive colour change, like decorations of the campus or anything, just minute changes going around to make the building look tidier out side, while the cobwebs still exist outside the windows..:)

BLOG LASHING-Fire Safety.(Part I)

Right, the last time I did a Blog lashing article,I hardly had any readers,But,now I have a loyal readers base and good ranking and everything.

But,it is no more “I”,but “We”,as the Blog has moved into its custom domain, many things have changed.

The time is ripe to publish, important stuff, which the management will have to look into, and now that people trust us,and our content, they will raise their eyebrows at our coming up Blog lashing articles,or Expose articles, these aren’t your regular sting operations, and there is more truth to these segments brought to you by the lifeatgitamhyd team, and we vow to do it honestly, thought letting a little personal pride to enter ,being rather harsh on the management at times.:P

Tuck, tuck, down with the philosophy ,and lets embrace our feature rich, articles titled  “Blog Lashing”,an introduction to the term Blog lashing can be found in our previous article,Blog Lashing-Deemed Universities.

Note:Do read the disclaimer(at the bottom of the post),before attempting to sue us..:P

FIRE SAFETY:

In the recent times, due to the sudden rise in the number of fire accidents ,their is a sudden rush of concern over the number of buildings which lack basic fire safety norms, and  don't comply with most of the fire safety regulations, forget the regulations, students in most of the educational institutes hardly have the slightest clue over “mock Fire drills” !!

The concern is greater still,in case of the main building of GITAM UNIVERSITY (HYDERABAD),as it is centrally air conditioned and we will deal with this separately in the post which follows, the GITAM UNIVERSITY  main building has to go thought the stringent fire safety norms due to the following reasons:

  • An Educational building.(Generally defined as :A building housing more than 20 students)
  • An High rise building(Generally defined as:More than four floors)
  • A centrally air conditioned building(Irrespective of whether it is used or not.:P)

This ,with the fact(to be proven in this post),that the current Fire safety precautions on campus are pretty poor, puts the students in a high risk zone,in the case of a fire accident.

Note:This blog( lifeatgitamhyd ) is dedicated to GITAM UNIVERSITY (HYDERABAD ),and Hence we are specifically pointing out to the flaws on campus,But do make a note that most of the educational buildings out here(In Hyderabad),have the same problems.

And here we are, The team of lifeatgitamhyd has finally complied a report on the fire safety on campus, though we don’t have access to the building plan of GITAM University Hyderabad, nor do we have the means to measure the width of staircase etc,we would like to provide ,and point out basic flaws which are evident on campus, like :

  • Inadequate number of fire extinguishers
  • No mock fire drills in One Academic year!!
  • Lack of fire safety equipment.

THE REFERENCES:

The NCB,the National Code of buildings,in its 2005 publication, lays down the required norms for Fire and Safety precautions,a copy has been used by this Blog,(though we hardly understood the jargon,in our humble capacity) ,and we have used the Delhi Fire services Buildings bye laws for fire safety, which deals specifically with the fire safety,We have also made use of the The Karnataka Fire Force Rules, 1971; and the Karnataka Fire Force Regulations, 1971,and we have had the AP Fire services Act  regulations for reference, most of the Acts mentioned above are heavily based on NCB,and hence they are to be strictly adhered too  all over the nation, thought some exceptions are made based on the geographical conditions.

The information derived from The Karnataka Fire Force Rules, 1971; and the Karnataka Fire Force Regulations, 1971is based on the understanding that the  information has been obtained from the office of the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services, Bangalore, and has been compiled from the National Building Code (NBC), 2005,By www.Citizenmatters.in .

The list of articles and sources follow at the end of this post.

THE PROCEDURE:

We will start  dealing with each and not necessarily every sub clause listed in the Delhi Fire services Act,and point out the flaws in the GITAM  University Hyderabad campus, main building, with pictures, when ever we can.

Note:The Delhi Fire safety act,is assumed by the team,to be a good benchmark for the Main building, even thought it exists in Andhra Pradesh. And we are under the impression that, most of the laws will be the same, after all safety is safety, come what may !

On the similar lines, the Karnataka Act,AP fire services Act follow.

The status of the main building, location of fire extinguishers(etc) is according to 04/05/2010,and the situation might have changed by now.

THE BUILDING:

The main building of GITAM University Hyderabad, consists of a total of  9 floors including the cellar,When fully built.

An outdated image follows, with only 4 floors visible, while the 5th and 6th have already been commenced, and close to completion,we don't have the pictures on hand(to be updated)

THE CELLAR:

The cellar which plays host to the Library and the computer labs, does not contain any visible fire extinguishers, the cellar consists of about 300 odd computers(C lab,Auto-Cad lab,Digital Library,MBA Lab,English Lab),with none of the labs having a fire extinguisher, the cellar like the whole building is centrally air conditioned  and a simple short circuit, either in the computers or in the servers ,can’t be averted, the nearest known Fire extinguisher is located in the Workshop/Store room.Which takes a normal students about 8 mins to travel to and fro,in a hurry,We possibly don’t have a Usain bolt,on campus .:P

Short circuits,in Computer labs,in various educational institutions and companies have been reported, and it has been a practice to have fire extinguishers on hand, but none of the five labs mentioned above have a visible fire extinguisher.

Not to forget the library, which is also located here and is void of visible fire extinguishes.

According to the clause,14.12 Basement of the Delhi fire services act(Henceforth referred to as “ the Act” )

14.12.2 The basement shall have the following requirements:

“   (iv).Adequate arrangement shall be made such that surface drainage does not enter the basement.

(v).The walls and floors of the basement shall be water-tight and be so designed that the effect of the surrounding soil and moisture, if any, are taken into account in design and adequate damp proofing treatment is given.

(vi). The access to the basement shall be separate from the main and alternate stair-case providing access and exit from higher floors. Where the staircase is continuous the same shall be enclosed type serving as a fire separation from the basement floor and higher floors. Open ramps shall be permitted if they are constructed within the building line subject to the provision of (iv).

”(italics added)

The following pictures will prove that this particular clause has been violated,

water_leakage

Image01417_thumb

This leakage was record on the 15th,April,2010.

For the full article,click here.

During the first semester, water leakage into the basement/cellar was very prominent, and there were cases of water leakage  in the Labs, causing  minor flooding of the labs, but most of these major leakage problems have been dealt with after the first semester.A brownie point to the management, but the above pictures prove that the work is still incomplete, and it clearly violates clause 14.12.2 (iv),(vi),of The Act.

FLAWS:

  • Lack of fire extinguishers.
  • Surface drain enters basement,probably violates,  14.12.2.,(iv),(v).
  • Only one staircase,probably violates,14.12.2. (vi).

THE FLOORS:

This segment in general deals with the irregularities of all the floors of the building, excluding the cellar which has been covered above.

The floors clearly lack visible(Come on,fire extinguishers tucked away in the directors room,or safely packed off in some nook of the main building aren’t function !!),as in functional fire extinguishers.

Let me quote section,16. Exit Requirements of the Act.

16.1 General - The following general requirements shall apply to exits.

e.Exits shall be clearly visible and the routes to reach the exit shall be clearly marked and sign posted to guide the population of floor concerned;

f.All exit ways shall be properly illuminated;

g.Fire fighting equipment where provided along exits shall be suitably located clearly marked but must not obstruct the exit way and yet there should beck indication about its location from either side of the exit way;

h.Alarm devices shall be installed to ensure prompt evacuation of the population concerned through the exits;

According to 16.1 (e), “the exits should be clearly visible, and the exit shall  be clearly marked…….concerned “

Each floor has two exits, like the two visible in the following picture, and one is the central staircase, thought all the exits are clearly visible, according to the above clause, they need to be “clearly marked and sign posted”,which they aren’t.

clicked from the second exit.

Those who think,we don't need signs(as we aren’t that blind ),think again in case of a fire, you can hardly see anything, and instead of thinking about finding the exits through the smoke, you can follow the signs help!!

The floors ,don't have an alarm system, trust us, we have never come across anything  which looks like a warning bell, forget a fire alarm !

So,this  violates  sub clause (h),which screams for the installation of alarm devices, which are currently non-existent !

though,it is worth noting that the following clause is strictly enforced ,

16.3.4 For building identified in Bye-law No. 6.2.4.1(high rise buildings), there shall be a minimum of two staircase and one of them shall be an enclosed stairway and the other shall be on the external walls of buildings and shall open directly to the exterior, interior open space or to any open place of safety.(spell check, content in braces added).

EXTERNAL STAIRCASE/FIRE ESCAPES:

We are dealing with a building of 9 floors, which has 3 staircases for the general use, and  No LIFT/Elevator has been installed, just yet.

Usually,a commercial building of five floors(high rise buildings to be precise),is supposed to have separate fire escapes/staircases.

The building we are dealing with is definitely not a commercial building, but due to its high rise status(9 floors!),it ought to have fire escapes too, here the clause 16.4.2 of The Act follows:

16.4.2 Fire Escapes or External Stairs

  • Fire escapes shall not be taken into account in calculating the evacuation time of a building.

  • All fire escapes shall be directly connected to the ground.

  • Entrance to fire escape shall be separate and remote from the internal staircase.

  • The route to fire escape shall be free of obstructions at all times, except a doorway leading to the fire escape which shall have the required fire resistance.

  • Fire escape shall be constructed of non-combustible materials.

  • Fire escapes stairs shall have straight flight not less than 75cm wide with 25 cm treads and risers not more than 19 cm. The number of risers shall be limited to 16 per flight.

  • Handrails shall be of a height not less than 90cm.

No point in discussing the violation of these guidelines,as the fire escapes are non existent, like the alarm system .:P

    LIFTS/ELEVATORS:

The following statements, will look like a piece out of the  popular AXN show,Ripley’s believe it or not!

But,believe us,there are close to 9 odd floors and yet the management shows no signs of putting up lifts/Elevators in place, thought they will have to once the top floors become operational, but for the case of factual representation of the main buildings violation of safety norms, lets pull up article ,16.4.9 Lifts

    1. All the floors shall be accessible for 24 hours by the lifts. The lifts provided in the buildings shall not be considered as a means of escape in case of emergency.

    2. Grounding switch at ground floor level to enable the fire service to ground the lift in case of an emergency shall also be provided.

    3. The lift machine room shall be separate and no other machinery shall be installed there in.

The sub clause (1),explicitly states that all floors shall be accessible for 24hrs by the lifts.

Accepted that, the 4th,5th,6th floor, are not in use just yet,but come on,even during the academic year of 2009-2010,Half way through the academic year, the building crossed the 15m mark, and the lifts have not yet been up.

    Clause 17 Fire Protection Requirements:

This particular clause is a bit  above our league,to understand it without the official building blue print / construction plan,So we will have to work our way through assumptions(Which will be as realistic as possible).

Look at the picture below and if you still think that a Fire engine can work its way thought to save the ass (read Rear/Back),of the main building you either gotta be insane or obliviously assume the driver of the engine to be insane,As we see it,there is no way a Fire engine can squeeze in through it,even though it will gain partial access through the temporary construction zone-parking area, which is given below,paz5513

Note:New visitors don’t worry,Google maps didn't update the Rudraram village database for a long time, hence these old snapshots are used, there are good roads leading to the campus :)

We see no feasible way the fire engine will make any further ingress to get closer to the main building's back.

Can a Fire engine move in ?

    AN ASSUMPTION:

To make our concern much more, clear  we will pull up a hypothetical situation, and assume fire at point 4.

The only feasible way to control the fire is rush in a fire engine through 3(The temporary construction zone),via the given points 1 and 2(in red).

    paz56_thumb9_mod

    point two

But once the Fire engine comes to point 3,there is no way it can directly access the place in question.

point 3 gives a deadlock to the Fire engine, and the efficiently with which a fire can be controlled is greatly reduced.   point three-deadlock  Asummed fire, point Four

  •

    POSSIBILITY:

Come on,We are not expecting a fire accident or something like that,we mean no ill,but then why are fire safety norms in place for ?

To be prepared for the worst, and that is what we are trying to project here .

And hence,we conclude that the current space between the the compound wall and the main building kills the efficiency of the fire fighting personnel,in case of a fire.

But,a point to be noted is that,if and when the campus does expand to 45 acres(as they keep telling us!),this will be sorted, out but we can never rule out the possibility of a fire accident in the meantime, can we ?

    AN END:

We are coming closer to the close of The Act,and its implications, and apparent violations in the main building of GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERBAD CAMPUS.

And we will wind up this session with this last segment here and cover the Karnataka  act,in the consequent post, and deal with the other elements, and possibly look at the above once again and deduce more flaws in the building and its consequences.

While a  third possible post with all the general flaws, irregularities , will conclude this three post blog lashing article.

The Clause 17 Fire Protection Requirements, has an appendix K,and we will be dealing with tit in this section of the post.

    APPENDIX K (Bye-Law No. 17.1)

Additional Fire Protection Requirements for Buildings more than 15m. in Height & Buildings as Covered by Bye-law No. 6.2.4.1,which refers to high rise buildings including and not entirely restricted to Institutional  buildings,as our review is restricted to the institutional building lets cut this para short for the sake of convince, but the actual clause is added too for reference, thought you might not understand it,you don’t necessarily have to read,

“6.2.4.1 Building Plans for Multi-storeyed / Special Buildings-For multi-storeyed buildings which are more than 15 m height and for special buildings like assembly, institutional, industrial, storage and hazardous occupancies,….”

The human readable summary of the above clause follows “GITAM UNIVERSITY’s main building  falls into the above clause and hence is subject to appendix K” ..:P

    AND ONCE AGAIN…

We make a move into the appendix K:

K-9 Provision of First Aid Fire Fighting Appliances

K-9.1 The first aid fire fighting equipments shall be provided on all floor including basements, occupied terrace, lift rooms in accordance with IS : 2217-1982 Recommendations for providing First Aid Fire Fighting Arrangements in Public Buildings in consultation with the Chief Fire Officer.

K-9.2 The fire fighting appliances shall be distributed over the building in accordance with IS 2190 Code of Practice for selection, installation and maintenance of portable first aid fire appliances “

IMPLICATION/VIOLATION(S) ON PART OF GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD(main building) :

  • (IN ACCORDANCE WITH “The Act”)

None of the above mentioned provisions are made available on any of the floors of the main building,If,the management of GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD,claims the above mentioned equipment to be available as on 04/05/2010,Then we  would call them a bunch of liars and put their pants on fire(no offence intended :P),lets get serious,If the management claims(Wrongly!!!) the above first aid on all the floors, then they are not placed in  functional, accessible  places,to be conveniently  used in case of an emergency.

And we can prove their claims(if any w.r.t,the above statement) to be wrong too, cause, none of the students will claim to have seen a first aid box or any of the above mentioned equipment in the main building on any of the floors, and if the students don’t spot it,then obviously the management can’t claim the first aid kits to be existent.

    But the truth is :

They don't exist on any of the floors,They might be in the ground floor(We are in a dilemma over this particular floor,as it houses the administration rooms, and First batch classrooms what not!,Hence we are not taking a risk by claiming it to have none or any  of the above mentioned equipment )

Now we are winding up this session by quoting one last source, according to www.MumbaiMirror.com, a random layman checklist includes,

    Checklist for school buildings
Sufficient open space around the school building
    Well-maintained, wide staircases
Easily covered distance from the classroom to the staircase
    Wide common passage
Sufficient and easily accessible fire extinguishers
In case of AC schools, sufficient and well-placed smoke detectors and sprinklers “

  • Assuming School, to imply Educational institutions,we conclude that the last two points(Which form the basic core of Fire safety ),are heavily violated by the main building .

Smoke Detectors/Sprinkles are like the fire extinguishers non existent in a centrally air conditioned building of about 9 floors.

    CONCLUSION:

The curtains fall on this post, and the conclusion is here, according to the above post we can conveniently assume in a jovial sense, that in case of a major fire accident ,we will have a new graveyard in Rudraram :)

On a serious note now,the main building according to our understanding and the preliminary review(with our extra crude methods) carried out by this group of students from GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERBAD,We conclude the following, the main building hardly complies with the norms required.

Accepted, that most of the buildings, educational institutions out there(in Hyderabad),don't comply, wit the above norms, this building may be better off than some of the buildings,But they are norms to be followed and adhered too.

Others choose to make a fuss out of it,once a disaster happens,we choose to make a fuss out of it before the disaster happens, whether it occurs or not, hardly matters ,Studying and virtually living in a building which complies with fire safety norms is our right.

    SCOOP!!-ATM(s).

  • EXPECTED ON       :    June,2010

  • STATUS                       :  Structure done-brick work pending

  • DEADLOCK               :  None

    INTRODUCTION:

The management has finally woken up from its slumber ,to realise that the nearest bank/ATM from the GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABD CAMPUS  is about 6 km away, nicely tucked away in the industrial hub of Isnapur(6 km from Rudraram).

Even thought the Buzzing Bee which usually gives us tip offs about the campus development, has been sleepy for quite some time,it hasn't been inactive,it just reported this development two days back, and we are ready with the article and pics.:)(Trust me,everything is good, except the Hostel review,I wonder why it is taking such a fucking long time!!)

So the busy Bee is here, and the bee is quite sure as it has always been that the ATM’s will be up and about before the start of the next semester,we are under the impression that the Faculty will be given initial access to the ATMs on a pilot basis,in the following month,so that the ATM’s can be used by the students in the next semester.

    THE FIRST PICS:

Initially getting pics has been a cumbersome task, but as the students of GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABD CAMPUS,started trusting us, we are better off on our pic reserves and we are able to update our gallery ,with the current developments on campus.

    DSC01016

The ATM’s will be located next to the Main building, and are easily accessible.

BUNKERS NOTE:A couple of students dropped by at our gmail account to tell us they would love to bunk in the ATM.

So all the back benchers, bunkers etc, please note, that a dedicated security guard will be in place right outside the ATM to see that no one misuses the ATM ala,use it for bunking,or messing around with the vending machines.

    DSC01025 DSC01015  DSC01018

    THE BANKS:

It won’t be all that hard to guess which bank will be setting up the ATM,the current list of probable banks are ,

    • UNION BANK
    • STATE BANK OF INDIA
    • INDIAN BANK

    UNION BANK:

    UBI

The GITAM UNIVERSITY,Vizag campus has an on campus branch of Union bank, and that implies the association of GITAM UNIVERSITY  with Union bank, may well be carried over to the Hyderabad campus too.

    DEADLOCK:

Well,if Union Bank does come up on the soil of GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD,we have a major problem on hand. The nearest UNION BANK Branch is located some 15-20 odd Km’s away, and this in itself is a major hurdle to transport the money to the ATM’s machines.

and Hence ,we can’t help but expect Union Bank, not to to set up the ATM.

    STATE BANK OF INDIA:

The most popular Indian Bank, and the most loved one too(Don't read more than you have to into this statement, cause it is according to me..!)

And the fact that,SBI has a branch located in Isnapur(6km from GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD),makes things much more sweeter.

The Major flaw of going in with Union Bank,is the distance, and this flaw is not visible in the case of SBI.

    SBI

    INDIAN BANK:

Why am I even considering this option ?

Well,if you remember Kibbutz’10(The first fest of GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD,I keep repeating it for the  convenience of the New readers, who possible have no clue over Kibbutz’10) ,Indian Bank, agreed to sponsor the fest ,and it also set up a Stall on campus ,The answer to  if  the bank is regretting it or not,is for the bank to decide..:P

    Indian Bank

So for all those optimist ppl,who might have the slightest expectation that it may be Indian bank,The Blog may be wrong, let me clear it,the Blog has been wrong on quite some occasions, but this is not once such, and the probability of Indian Bank setting up an ATM is extremely minute, nevertheless possible..:)

    My Pick:

    • SBI
    • Union Bank
    • Indian Bank

And ,this list isn't exhaustive, and we had to work our way through the administration to get hold of this info, and you never know the Bank, which may pull up the ATM may not have figured in this list..:)

    Regards,

    lifeatgitamhyd

    UPDATE ON 6th 2010 :

The bank has been confirmed, Indian Bank wins it out,and We were under the impression,it will have the least probability to win the bid.

    DSC01071

Apparently this whole structure will be housing the mini Bank, and the ground floor will be housing the ATM machines.

    The MBA’s D-Day !!!….DAY:06/04/2010

First thanks a lot for those contributions MBA ppl,Loved them, but  I was a little bit perplexed over what pics should have been published and what shouldn't have been,So any problem,we will surely delete the pics just mail us either at admin@lifeatgitamhyd.com for deleting stuff ,and contributions can be channelled to lifeatgitamhyd@gmail.com..

    *Curtains up*

    *Fireworks around *

    INTRODUCTION:

This blog, has always been focused on the happenings on campus, but the MBA stream was virtually non existent on the campus of GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD,what with only 23 odd ppl,,and  being kinda of non controversial they hardly featured on this Blog, but with the change in times it calls for change in the way this Blog works and we are happy to inform that we have finally made a mark, and found a way into the MBA classroom..!!

But,the thing, which made this Blog sit up and take note of the MBA ppl,was Kibbutz’10,(The first fest of GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD)and that is when we actually realized that there is more to the MBA ppl than meets the eye , it just isn’t about 23 ppl, there is more to the 23 ppl, than the 230 odd B.Tech ppl(Currently),and we are here to make amends with this second post, entirely dedicated to the MBA stream, the previous one being located,Here.

And here follows, the last working day of the MBA..

    THE JOURNEY:

Tension, confusion, and all kinda of ridiculous emotions marked the last trip to Rudraram, for the MBA ppl.

The last hour of preparation before the presentation, implies trying to squeeze in all the info you can into the small brain, and most of them followed suite, while others had a great belief in they saying that you shouldn’t prepare 24hrs before the exam/presentation,and kept peeping out of the window.

    THE GROUPS:

    Group 4:

    Batch 4

    GROUP 3:

    Batch 3

Note:BATCH TWO PIC NEEDED PLZ mail it to lifeatgitamhyd@gmail.com !

    THE PRESENTATIONS:

The presentations started at about 10’odd,and each team had about 1 hr to give the presentation(correction needed),the presentations were on a roll one after the another, each team feeling glad at having completed the presentation.

    The Gossip kings..(Just Kidding..:D)

(Either of you prakash bhaiya or Vamsi Bhaiya has a problem with this pic,plz mail us,and we will oblige by deleting it..:))

    Sick of them..:P Image0576  Image0578      Image0599

Note:More information solicited on the above pics.Send then all  to lifeatgitamhyd@gmail.com ,and we will republish this article..!

Or better still,Anyone from the MBA interested to write the article ??

I would love to feature it on the Blog !!

    THE FEEDBACK SESSION:

    Image0601 feedback session

    CONCLUSION:

Batch four, came out super cool from the presentation season..:)

    Congratulations..!!!

    *Applause*

According to Me,The only good thing about GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABD,is this guy,the person who follows in this pic,is what makes this campus such a hit..!

The MBA ppl love, him the B.tech ppl, love him,he isn’t just sweet and extremely caring, but extraordinary patient for a guy of his age.

A B.tech student  drops a statement in agreement “While promoting Kibbutz'’10,Everyone knew who Koteshwar Rao sir was,but ppl hardly knew Prof.(Blurred out!)Dr.  ”.:P

He carries a special aura around him,and with his charismatic persona,he is a fun filled person to watch ,accepted he did make mistakes, but come on he is human enough, like you and me to make them,I pity those ppl who will be joining GITAM UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD Campus, next year,or the year after, who will not be able to experience him,the way the current batch does(or rather did),with only 250 ppl on campus,it isn't crowded and you tend to bump into Prof. Koteshwar garu very often, the sight of him seldom ceases to put a smile on your face, and the sad part is that,we have learnt he might be leaving,But if you want my take on it,I would part with anything respectable in the world, rather than part with this Sir.

It a shame that he has to step down as the director of school of management, but everything happens for the greater good and hence,it may be for Prof.Koteshwar sir’s good that he had to step down,we will miss him a lot,and hope he finds better companions in his future..:P

On this cheerful note, lets conclude the blog post.

     concluding the session

    Regards,

    lifeatgitamhyd

Before,I log out,I would like to give you ppl something you can chew on,and hang onto it,till we get a full post up and about the place..
