Freedom Zone: Three Months….!!

I walked in expecting very little from my new found home, located in this small village called as Rudraram,Which I have never heard of before,Nor did the name of the mandal Patancheru, look friendly to me,I have always heard of Patahncehru to be a place filled with loads and loads of Industries, and the moment I heard the name, the  thing which struck me was pollution,as patancheru was always in the paper in connection with pollution, and the prospect of having to study in such a place for the next four years looked like a terrible idea to me.

The pictures of the campus found on LAGH didn’t help me much either,a semi-constructed building with all the works pending, made me dizzy, but since the options for me were very limited, given my extremely large rank in EAMCET ,and below par performance in AIEEE (Don't even think about IIT-JEE!!),the only option left was GITAM,yes other Deemed Universities like VIT,SRM,MIT were an option,And I did end up with some not so good scores there, but since my parents were reluctant to (thanks to my past,I was caught watching porn in my 7th grade, obviously after this My dad would never let me out of his sight,And I never pushed forward for VIT/SRM etc :)).send me outstation, GITAM seemed the only sane option left and I had to but take the step forward, and I must confess I was very brave in taking admission into this institution.

ADMISSIONS:

The admission, process was complete in a jiffy since I was clear on what I wanted from the start ,My choice of branch and  Campus(Hyd/Vskp),was pretty clear from the Start.

I wanted Civil, and that is what I got,and while everyone in the counselling centre was busy deciding whether to choose the Hyd campus or the VSKP campus,I was clearly focused on the Hyderabad campus, not because it was so fucking “fascinating”,but because I had no other option.

The admission procedure was over in a jiffy, and the classes were set to begun on the 10th of July,But I decided to come on the 15th of July .

BUS RIDE:

Living about 58 km away from the campus,I hated the prospect of having to travel in these rickety old RTC buses all the way from my currently dwelling  near DSNR to Rudraram.

A  month of the never ending travel in these buses which move at snails space(and the added burden of back pain ) I am still cursing the luck of my seniors,as they get to travel in better buses and cover the distance  in better time too, they don’t have to wait for their buses to come from some depot, nor do they have to bear the water leaks from the bus windows/top.(Yes!During the rainy season the RTC bus used to leak!!),I then decided to bid farewell to these darn buses, and moved into the Hostel.

HOSTEL LIFE:

The first month of my hostel life was the month of August, and wait till I share the worst  part of my hostel life.

I was given a room in the first floor, which was vacated by a EEE student,I did take some time to get used to the way guys lived in the hostel.Suddenly I found myself in the company of 300 other guys,I felt strange and doubted my orientation for a second,What in the fucking world was I doing in a room with three other guys, who roam around in their Shorts, and most of the time semi-nude in the hostel room, this seemed to be the norm in my wing on the first floor, while the other two floors were more or less sensible when it came to clothing.

But as the time passed,I realized why people in the hostel liked moving around in shorts,it was a very simple reason, the comfort given by shorts is pretty great and simply phenomenal, and to hell with what others think about it(What !! everyone including our seniors act as if they are the brand ambassadors of Shorts!).

Getting used to roaming around in Shorts in the hostel was pretty easy, but the difficult part came in when I  had to get used to this concept of the common bathroom and loos thingy, these washrooms weren’t as lame as they show in movies, the bathrooms were relatively tidy,And since I was mentally prepared for the worst kind of bathrooms, the bathrooms kind of made me feel okay,But I am still getting used to this concept of common bathrooms.

GROUPIES:

I have herd that the concept of groups being formed on the basics of caste was pretty predominant in the Vizag campus, even thought the caste equation was pretty low in the Hyderabad campus,I was already aware of some groups formed by some of the senior students like,Crusaders,Saints,Freaks etc, these names are etched in the classroom benches(Okay,I did also read about them in LAGH,but I saw these names on the benches of the senior classrooms during the counselling time),and my fellow juniors were not far behind, with various group names like ,MIB(yeah,Men in Black),Frontiers ,Venice(Gawd..!! That is the name of a place for heavens sake!),Rebels etc,the groupies thing took to wings, but this was on a lower order, and never gained popularity.

This kind of amused me,since the concept of groups was totally insane, but them When were humans ever sane ? :P

MESS BILL:

One month in the hostel, and a disaster fell upon me,I had to do the hard task of conveying my first ever hostel bill to my parents at Rs 5315(Since I used the Dhobi who is fucking awful at his work!),I was pretty confused if joining the hostel was a good idea.

But,After the wardens(Who are the best a hostel can have!) took to the aim of brining the mess bill down to sub 5,000,I was kind of relived,And they were successful at bringing the bill down it is now at 4,700 (at least for me :))

SPORTS:

Back home,All I used to do was surf surf and surf the internet, outdoor activates were very limited, but since the hostels doesn’t have a Wi-Fi,nor do Wireless devices like Reliance net connect,Tata photon+  work in Rudraram.most of the time you are Either playing Shuttle or Cricket, and if you are lucky you get to play Table Tennis(Very rarely,it is a zone where seniors rule! :P),and loads of other activities, and games my most favourite one being the Water Rugby day!

HAUNTED STORIES:

People are gonna ask me about this for sure,Are ghosts for real ?

Let me tell you all this haunting of the hostel shit,is a story cooked up by some people including LAGH along with some movie makers, decided to capitalize on the issue, and they were very successful at it,Once the video went online, the next day I was bombarded with questions about the “Female Ghosts”,which were haunting the hostels.

I was at a loss of words, since I had no clue about the haunted Stories trailer, but the video was pretty credible and I had a hard task explaining my classmates, that Ghosts don’t exists in the hostels!!,and they were just rumours, doesn't anyone seriously read the disclaimer or What ?

[For those who don’t know about it Check YouTube For haunted stories By LAGH.]

Random Stuff:

Other random stuff which form a part of my hostel life include bathing once in a couple of days,Don’t get me wrong the hostels don’t stink or anything, but the fact remains that Quite a lot of boys don’t sleep for more than 3-4 hours, hence the need for bathing never arises,What are Deos and face washes supposed to be for ? :P

THE LAKE:

How could i even forget to mention the GITAM lake ??

It is the most popular hang out spot for us,and we simply love the scenic beauty,it is a pity,We will be missing it after the Dusherra vacation,Since the wall is coming up :(

IN THE END….

I was but not fully satisfied with GITAM in the first place, but three months down the road,my opinion has kind of changed, guess this hold true for any college/institution,and GITAM is no different .

Three months have passed away and it is time for me to gear up for my semester end exams,I had a good time writing this article(Do watch out for my articles in the upcoming newsletter, which unlike this article isn’t anonymous :D)
