Mids,The Engineers day:A flop show :( DAY:14-15/09/2010

DAY 14/09/2010:

GITAM University presented, one of its worst terror ever in the form of the mids,day two was a bit weird to watch. it was chemistry and math on the papers(ya i agree, it’s an incorrect combination :-p), Chem went on pretty well for many people. Chem was like “you know you write and if you don't then  mix something and you’ll get the marks coz our faculty is waiting to get some new mixtures and want to get a life :-p”.   but math was like “oh! shit what do these numbers mean???” . It was a tragic end for many jr’s and next thing you know is every one is in the new canteen trying Manchuria, i just love the way how we re-boot ourselves, shift deleting the previous content(wow, what a comparison :-D ).

And as usual again every one was jumping here and there in the hostel for the leaked papers(rumored), and this time it was the Mech and ECE guys..

DAY:15/09/2010: 

TABLE TENNIS:

The selections for the team of five members,who will be representing  GITAM University Hyderabad was held today,among loads of confusion,and to the disgust of quite some students,the selections were supposed to be held with having a play off between the probable students,for the five vacant slots.

But,somehow things didn’t go out as planned,and the play-offs weren’t held,out of the five members selected the,selection of a particular senior and a couple of others juniors is being looked down upon by many of the juniors,since they strongly believe that these are definitely not the cream de pie of GITAM University Hyderabad,when it comes to Table tennis.

The major question raising up now,is that on an avg. a 11 point or 21 point table tennis game takes about 10-20 mins,and the play off’s could have been held,but still they weren't.

And this is where the the ugly head of influence probably pops up. 

ENGINEERS DAY:

Boring,as simple as it can get that was what it was all probably about in the “celebrations” (sarcasm intended )which were held on campus GITAM University Hyderabad,in connection with the Engineers day celebration ,which is celebrated on the birth anniversary of one of India’s well-known engineers,Sri vishweswaraya garu.

First the whole program itself,was totally ruined(fu’ked up,would be a better word!!),right from the word go to the end of the program it wasn’t just uninteresting except for some parts,but it was so boring and unorganized that the anchors and also the participants failed to grab the attention of the audience.

Accepted,the blame equally rests on most of the  audience(seniors),as they showcased a very rude profile by not having the  minimum courtesy  of staying or at least turning up for the program,but were busy elsewhere.

The better we talk about this event,the better for us,lets not recollect this bad memory,and We strongly believe that such a “celebration” held in honor of such a great engineer,is more of a blemish than a tribute to Vishweswarya garu.

The highlight:

• Determination of faculty to make it happen.
• Some serious good talent exhibited.
• Refreshments (lame!!)
• Anymore ??

Repulsive elements:

• Ideas aren’t sufficient,implementation it!!
• Low turnout of seniors.
• Lack of clear cut instructions(confusion over technical talk and technical presentation)

It was announced to be a technical talk,but it turned out to confsuing as on

• Bad organizing(due to which the hll was nearly emtpy by the end of first 15 mins)
• The technical quiz was cancelled!( It was the only other event!!)  .

MIDS-DAY THREE:

Physics,this blog has had a long standing biased view on the subject itself,thought in the recent times we haven't been indulging on blog lashing anyone particular,but the constant review we get from our dear fellow juniors make us think twice,if we are loosing our stand  on the various issues students are having with respect to the faculty,we are going to start lashing pretty soon,but this time we will think twice before we do anything(people might interpret “anything” to be “stupid”,but we aren't).

The last time around,the mistake the previous authors are:

• Extremely rude lashing(We loved reading it though !)
• An In-your-face stand.

This time,we will probably try to be a little bit more responsible,but will make sure that our stand isn’t biased.

Chop Chop!!

Done with the crap back to the issues with today paper.

Physics was a bit tough(not for our multi-talented first benchers), many were unhappy about the question paper pattern. Come on guys, it was so difficult to copy, if a person got a theory paper, his bench-mate was entitled to a paper full of numerical problems(holy cow!!!). And the result is obvious, everyone had a big question mark on their faces and started staring at each other. Before 3 o’clock every one was out sharing their feelings and we found a bunch of mech-a students taking pictures(fail gang is what they called themselves). And as usual everyone rebooted(:-p) and started partying again.

Mids,Ganesh Nimarjanam,New canteen,Sports selection : DAY:13/09/2010

There are very few days which have witnessed such kind of activity in the history of GITAM University Hyderabad campus,and this days will be one of those ,for the sheer thrill and excitement and also a miniscule part of disappointment at the loss of a fully functioning mobile.,why does this concern us ?

We will deal with it later.

ACTIVITY:

Today was supposed to be another boring Monday for many students ,but  it wasn’t as the juniors got to face their first full fledged exams,with various seating arrangements, but an exciting thing to face their first exams,with special crafted to perfection seating arrangements :p.

• New canteen
• Wi-Fi trial runs
• MIds
• Ganesh Nimarjanam

 

NEW CANTEEN:

Is it new any more ?

I mean every gitamite and his uncle probably knows about the canteen,and the umpteenth number of times the re-opening date has been jumping around ,but this time,the date didn’t jump,neither did the time.

The new canteen was expected to be opened amongst much fanfare,but the mids which are currently torturing the students of GITAM University Hyderabad ,played spoilsport,since most of the students shied away from the canteens in general,be it the old one or the new one.

Quality:

The quality of food has been pretty good,and the pricing for FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) like soft drinks etc,was similar to that of the old canteen,while the others in the food menu were pretty exceptional,like the Manchuria ,and veg noodles which was true value for money,it was the same in the last canteen too.

Quality in both the canteens is more or less the same,but only time will decided who will win the battle out right ,and the basic wining point will be quality,the other prime factor would be variety of food,with the opening of the Subway(Oh ,yes it is coming,maybe next decade or so.. :-P),and the heritage parlour(this will take a month,not a decade),both the canteens will be hard pressed to get students to spend more time and money with them.

Variety:

Variety of food will be even more crucial,since Rudraram is pretty far away from the heart of “civilization”(Hyderabad!!),and getting junk food like pizzas,burgers and what not is pretty difficult as of now,and even if you try you will probably end up with something like cabbage curry placed in between two buns,and call it a burger!

And the old canteen has a good edge over the new one,since,it continues to server awesome chat street menu in the evening,while the new canteens forte would probably be,breakfast and lunch,A quick bite won’t be an option since it is relatively farther than the old canteen.

TRIVIA:

• Did you know,the first people to “inaugurate” the new canteen aren’t the director of GITAM University Hyderabad campus(Dr.Ch Sanjay) ,and Verma sir(Resident director GITAM University Hyderabad Campus),but a bunch of seniors,who got there first,they will remain the first persons to have used the new canteen,the faculty/management has to take the second place.
• The new canteen can seat 152 students,and extendable to ~180  students.
• Dr.Sanjay apparently announced in a couple of junior classrooms that the canteen will be of 450 capacity.

SPORTS SELECETION:

The various campus teams selections  for the CBIT fest this weekend are on a roll,and as usual the tussle for slots be it in cricket or football continue among the juniors and the seniors,the game in general surely hasn’t taken a back seat,but this doesn’t hold true for cricket

.      

CRICKET:

Basically,a campus team needs to be selected after public announcement but due regard must be paid to  the fact that due to shortage of time many regular procedures had to be over looked,but this doesn't imply foul play(as many juniors claim) by seniors or any one else is called for,Mind you the PT sir is awesome,and does his job well,but more often than not(being a new faculty member),might (the keyword being Might!),be mislead.

Various students have been trying desperately to tap into this loop hole in the current selection system,and use it as a leverage to showcase their influence,this time you might get away with it people but next time,it will be our turn.

The problem gets even more muddier ,due to the mid exams going on right now,and very few juniors are taking the plunge .

Football:

The beautiful game seems to be better off when it comes to team selections,compared to cricket.

The procedure was more or less similar to the cricket process,but more transparent,and lesser domination of the seniors ensured that,the selection were relatively fair.

But,the juniors who didn't get a chance(getting a chance is different from not getting selected)  to have a go in the selection process,cried foul,and they duly did,even in spite of the extra tight time constrains,it isn’t but difficult to make the process more functional.

Others:

Other sports like TT and volleyball,aren't far behind,each one showcasing exceptional talent and each one has its own story of college politics and students who got in due to either “rep”(reputation),or due to sheer manipulation of the process in the slightest way possible to get the most desired outcome :)

 

Wi-Fi:

Here we go again,with one of the most sought of facility is the Wi-Fi,nd this time we get to see the accesses points in flesh courtesy(Cisco!!),and we are assured of the full campus Wi-Fi once the trial runs are complete.

Q.How long will it take ?

A.A couple of days more(We bet atleast a week more).

Q.When is it coming to the hostels ?

A.It will be activated about a week after it comes on campus.

Q.Can we access Facebook /orkut/youtube ?

A.No!!

MIDS:

Every jr was very tensed and excited about their first mids. I was shocked to see my mates studying in the bus(c’mon guys we’re not in high school anymore). As you all know, monday marked the beginning of a very special kinda exams. They’re special because of the perfectly disastrous seating arrangement. We, jr’s have never seen such a weird setup ever before. It was almost 10 o’clock(half an hr before the start of the first exam), two guys walk into the class and pasted two papers depicting the seating arrangement and when they left, we went over there to take a look at the papers and every single face was having a big ? mark. It took about ten minutes for us to clearly understand the two bloody papers and finally everyone looked at each other and said “holy shit” :-p. Uff… not a single junior saw such a kinda seating arrangement, every class had only 6 students from a single class in a row and your benchmate was obviously from some other section. Each class contained all the 8 branches students,six from each section.

And later on, the ultimate shock was that there were different sets of papers(wtf!!!) and they were organised in such an ugly way that your class people get the same set. In our boards, any person sitting around you used to get a different set and was difficult to copy, but now these guys employed a new method i.e two sections get the same set (w.r,t their MUTUAL lecturer). Finally, the first exam finishes and every one came out with a grin on their face. Everyone got a 2hr break, wait a minute, it is stupid to call it a break,coz every one was busy studying “C” and some people even skipped their lunch.

The day went on well and in the evening at around 6 o’clock RUMOURS started spreading that Civil-A students got an hand over the next days maths paper, and ECE-A and MECH-A students came out with some important questions for the chemistry exam. Anyways, nobody knows whether its true or not, but the hostel corridors were a bit messy, everyone was hopping from room to room in search of CIVIL and IT guys .

 

GANESH NIMARJANAM:

The spot light of today ganesh nimarjanam ,wasn’t the whole process of nimarjanamn,but the serious consequences.

Close to 15 odd phones,were drenched and hence rendered useless,as the students who went into the pond to perform the nimarjanam forgot to remove their mobiles from their pockets while going into the water.

The result:Extreme shortage of spare phones.

Editors Speak:Discussion Forums!

Hey!!

After our disastrous attempt at making an online forum and an integrated website,aloof from the LAGH blog hit plenty of road blocks and failed to reach more than 50 users,we have decided to shut down,actually de activate our full time website hosted by webs.com at www.lifeatgitamhyd.webs.com.

We saw it coming,but we weren’t fully prepared to leave the whole concept of discussion forums behind.

Where Have We been ?

This is exactly where we have been working ,not full time but yes work never the less,we have been way to busy checking out various forums and way to make the forums work better and also considered hosting our own PHP-BB on a rented server,but it would have been expensive,but in the mean time,the blog has been very low on content,since we are still not getting the required number of regular contributors,we have had some difficult times getting to publish fresh content.

But since one of our major hurdle(of many more to come!),has passed away,we can now divert our energy and resources to where it all started from,running the blog efficiently :).

And now,that there are many new entrants on the internet spectrum with respect to GITAM University Hyderabad Campus in the form of a promising blog like www.gitambuddies.blogspot.com ,than all the other previous ones which at some point or other tired to be pot-boilers,when the whole concept of community blogging was relatively new to GITAM University Hyderabad Campus,like , www.reallifeatgitam.blogspot.com ,www.it-gitamhyd.blogspot.com,and loads of others things !

But gitambuddies is no better,it converted our  Contact Us into meet us at,with no credit due to this blog,whatsoever!

But,we are not taking anything in an offensive way,but just saying a simple text like “sourced from:www.lifeatgitamhyd.com ”,would have made it so much better,since all the content posted on LAGH is entitled to be published under Creative commons 3.0,and can be used only if due credit is given to the blog :)

We aren't trying to shut you down buddies but just saying that you aren’t being totally fair,but got to admit you have a knack for networking who ever you are!

That apart lets get back to our main point of discussion.

New!

So we have decided to start the required back ground work for hunting new discussion boards and forums,and after days and days of tests runs and comparing close to 40 odd forum boards(Try visiting http://www.forum-software.org/ for all the good forums present over the world!),weighting their pros and cons and also keeping an eye on various new start ups like http://www.tangler.com/ ,which are relatively new to the main stream internet scenario ,and invitation only start ups ,and loads of other we finally decided to give the tal.ki a go ahead and see if it full fills our requirement for a smart discussion forums :).

Why Not Webs .com ?

To complex and to clumsy to maintain to be frank,We don’t have the time to maintain a full fledged website,and don’t have the heart to work with webs.com which is extremely complex,but looks way to simple :)

The major reason we didn't decide to go ahead with tal.ki initially is that the forum was relatively new and sported very few features,and hence we decided to go ahead with the webs.com ,but times has changed and the webs.com looks way to crude as of now.

Webs.com had an option of a separate internal blog,We thought it might be a good idea,but it failed to pick heat ,and the Gallery section(Users contributed pictures!),is currently being taken care of by our ShutterBugs photo-blog.

With the creation of the LAGH FB ,the Events part of webs.com can be taken care of,and so does the Birthday reminder(Calendar).

So,indirectly we haven unintentionally broken up the various components of our site hosted at webs and created something probably more functional :

We will due it all in due course of time ,For now have fun ,and we wont take longer than a week to get back to our regular(read once in two days)updates :)
